TÔI HẰNG MONG

Ơi người bạn chưa gặp nhau đã mến !
Ðọc bài thơ sao đã thấy nôn nao .
Tôi hằng mong sẽ có một ngày nào
Trên chiếu rượu mời nhau tình nghĩa vẹn

Bạn thừa biết bao la là trời biển
Mà người thơ muôn dặm vẫn tìm về
Tưởng mùa Xuân nở trắng một rừng lê
Tưởng tài tử muôn phương gồm một mối

Từ lưu lạc thấy một mầu đen tối
Giữa Hoa Kỳ lòng chẳng muốn đua chen .
Chữ danh hờ sao mà quá nhỏ nhen ?
Nhưng thơ đó đã nghe như nắng ấm

Như Thung Lũng Hoa Vàng đầy hoa gấm
Như tri âm riêng một giọng tiêu tao .
Tôi bỗng dưng thấy thi hứng dạt dào
Thơ cần thiết có khác gì không khí
Chưa dám nói chúng mình là tri kỷ
Khi câu thơ muốn cầm bút khuyên son
Người tài hoa không sóng nổi như cồn

Oh, Ever-Longing
(To poetry friends, whether we’ve met or not…)

Oh, friend whom I’ve not yet met but already hold dear!
Reading your poem stirs an eager restlessness within me.
I’ve often longed for a day
When we’ll meet and have some drinks together.

You know how vast the sky and sea can be,
Yet poets traverse countless miles to find their way back.
As if spring blossoms a white orchard of pear trees,
As if artists from all lands gather in one place.

From exile, all I see is gloomy darkness.
Here in the U.S., my heart wants to avoid the contentious rivalry.
The chase for empty fame is just so petty,
But in poetry, I’ve felt the warmth of sunshine.
Like the Golden Valley adorned with beautiful flowers,
Like a kindred spirit with a voice so serene.

Suddenly, poetic inspiration surges within me,
For poetry is essential, like the air we breathe.
I dare not say we are soulmates,
Though some verses urge the pen to highlight in red.
A talented person’s fame doesn’t rise like tumultuous sea waves.
